1. Importance of annulus liquid level control in coalbed methane production
Coalbed methane is mainly adsorbed on the surface of the coal matrix. When the formation pressure drops to the desorption pressure of the coal seam, the methane in the coal seam will desorb. Coalbed methane extraction is a process of drainage and pressure reduction. The pressure drop of the coal seam is achieved through drainage and production, that is, using drainage and production equipment, oil pipe drainage, and casing gas production. As the drainage progresses, the annulus liquid level drops, and the coal seam pressure also drops. Controlling the coal seam pressure drop rate and using a reasonable production pressure difference for drainage and production are particularly important for the output of coalbed methane. It is generally believed that:
( 1) Too fast a liquid drop speed is not conducive to expanding the pressure drop area, forming a large pressure drop funnel, which is not conducive to the desorption of coalbed methane from the wellbore. (2) Too fast a liquid drop speed destroys the original state of the coal seam, which will damage the fracture system of the coal seam and cause a decrease in permeability.
( 3) Too fast a liquid drop speed causes a large amount of coal powder and sand to come out of the coal seam, causing the coal seam to collapse, blocking the gas-water channel, reducing production, and causing pump sticking, making drainage and production impossible to proceed normally.
( 4) Too slow a liquid drop speed prolongs the drainage and production time and increases investment.
( 5) An appropriate liquid drop speed makes the drainage capacity of the pump adapt to the liquid supply capacity of the coal seam, fully utilizes the formation energy, and ensures that the annulus liquid level drops evenly, slowly, continuously, or stably.
The control of the liquid drop rate is actually often achieved through the control of the annulus liquid level. To control the liquid level well, first, the liquid level must be accurately and timely determined; otherwise, liquid level control cannot be discussed. Especially in the early stage of drainage and production or when approaching the critical desorption pressure, the gas and water production changes greatly, causing fluctuations in the annulus liquid level, and frequent measurements are required. Therefore, annulus liquid level determination is an important and frequent task in coalbed methane production.
